Power Points & Switchboards | Installation And Servicing

In your home, the heart of your electrical system is your switchboard. While we might not think about them until we need to, it’s important to keep your switchboard in mind, especially if you’re renovating or building. When would my switchboard need to be fixed or upgraded?

You might need to upgrade your switchboard if you:

  • Have ceramic fuses that are cracked, stuck, or operate poorly
  • Have higher potential electrical loading than your switchboard was designed for
  • Have noticed that it’s in poor condition
  • Know that it contains asbestos or materials that it shouldn’t (like chipboard)
  • Don’t have safety switches on your switchboard, and want them.

If your switchboard is more than 16 years old, it might not have safety switches. If it doesn’t, then it’s a good idea to make sure that you have safety switches at each power point.

What’s the difference between a circuit breaker and a safety switch?

A safety switch is designed to cut power fast, to save lives. A circuit breaker, on the other hand, is really for prevention of fire by stopping circuits from becoming overloaded.
